Jaques
Chess Range: Limited Edition of 250 sets only, available
right now by mailorder through chess-uk.com. A unique
collectors set to treasure. The 4.4" Original Staunton Chess
Set is Jaques latest creation in its premium collectors
chess set range. The Staunton chessmen are a reintroduction
of a design produced by John Jaques between 1850 and 1851.
The form, board presence and exquisite craftsmenship of
these magnificent chessmen have been recptured and are offered
to our customers on a limited basis. The pieces are crafted
from fine boxwood and jet black ebony. Each piece is very
heavily weighted and cushioned with rich English leather
in the original Jaques style. From the graceful angular
Bishop's head, with its distinctive wide open cut to the
noble two-piece Knight taken straight from the visges of
those magnififcent steeds gracing the Parthenon, this is
one of Jaques finest chess creations. Even the King's Formé
cross finial is accurately detailed and can be easily removed.

inlaid wooden chess board, specially made for this set.. |

Jaques
- the original name for Staunton Chess sets: Jaques
Staunton chess pieces were born, and to quote a famous book
on early chess 'Throughout its history, nothing had made
such an impact on the design of chessmen as the introduction
of the English Staunton Chess Pieces'. Simple symbols were
used for each piece - a crown for the King, a coronet for
the Queen, a mitre for the Bishop and a castle for the Rook.
The horses head for th Knight was taken from the marble
sculptures on the Parthenon in Athens, collected by Lord
Elgin and known as the Elgin Marbles, and the Pawn based
on the Freemason's Square and Compasses. The first-ever
Staunton set was launched by Jaques in late 1847 with the
benefit Staunton's name - a byword for chess at the time.
The launch was helped by a considerable amount of free publicity
in the Morning Herald - a whole front column being devoted
to its introduction. Within 10 years, nearly all important
chess games were played with Staunton Chessmen, which is
still the case today. Staunton Chess sets have been produced continually by John Jaques from 1847 up to the present day, except during wartime. Production of ivory sets ceased in the early 1930s, but boxwood sets continued right up to the end of the war. Today, Jaques top-of-the-range chess sets are made from exactly the same materials and to the same specifications as the original boxwood and ebony sets, and are polished by hand - no lacquering is used - bringing out the natural colour and feel in the wood. If you wish to buy a Staunton chess set, then Jaques is the best name - afterall, they are the only company allowed to use the term "Staunton Chess Sets" - all other manufacturers must call them "Staunton-Style Chess Sets".
